San Diego Zoo with Rick Schwartz.
Xiao Liwu is the 6th panda cub born to Bai Yun at the San Diego Zoo and he just went on exhibit. I have been watching him on the panda cam since the day he was born. ( http://www.sandiegozoo.org/pandacam/ ) Pandas are so cute and many people don't realize that all pandas belong to China. They are on loan to us. I like pandas and wanted to do some research and share what I learn about them.
Giant pandas are very endangered. In China vets are trying to help the species survive with in vitro fertilization. I read that when pandas give birth to twins, one usually dies. But in China they switch off the cubs every few hours in captivity so that both cubs survive.
Pandas have a weird way of eating too. Once they grip the bamboo they strip it and then they eat it. Bamboo is the main food source for pandas. About once a year all the bamboo dies and the pandas that live in that area have to walk about 2 miles to find another food source and many of the old pandas die on the journey. The bamboo dies because of deforestation. Pandas are also dying because of traps that people set for deer and the pandas get caught in them. People are still hunting them illegally too.
The Chinese name for the panda is xiongmao. It means giant cat bear. They are called that because of their cat
like pupils. Pandas eat bamboo, small animals, and fish. They live to be about 25-30 years old and can be as big as 60 inches long.
I like to talk about wildlife and share stuff with people so that they will care about the animals too. My mom says this is called creating awareness and making a difference.
